What is a trailer?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary describes it as a “selected group of scenes that are shown to advertise a movie.” Movie trailers are promotional tools which are used to get audiences excited about an upcoming film. They are classically shown in movie theaters before the feature presentation begins, and they are also widely distributed on the Internet, being among the top five forms of video content enjoyed by video users. Films with a large advertising budget may also show movie trailers on television, and studios classically add trailers for their own films to their video releases. In some cases, movie trailers have been so well-designed and beautifully executed that they have won awards, a remarkable feat for an advertisement lasting less than five minutes in most cases.

And why the name “trailer”?

Back in the old days, the so-called “trailers” were played at the end of the newsreel or supporting-feature, hence the name (they “trailed” the actual film). Doing this reduced the number of reel changes that a projectionist would have to make. When companies realized that people were leaving right after the movie ended, they decided to move the advertisements to the beginning of the film and now, the trailers appear even long before the actual movie is released.
